TOWN & COUNTRY - The Webster pitching duo of
Will Savage and
Eric Broughton was downright filthy as the Gorloks continued to distance themselves from the rest of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC).
Broughton and Savage didn't allow a lead-off hitter to reach in any inning and held Maryville to five hits over 14 innings in leading Webster to the SLIAC sweep by scores of 8-1 and 5-0 Tuesday at Weber Field. The Gorloks now hold a four-game lead over the second-place Saints.
Savage, who was perfect through four innings, had his streak of 14 2/3 scoreless innings snapped when Maryville scored its lone run of the twinbill with two outs in the sixth inning. He ran his record to 5-1 with his third complete game of the season, allowing two hits with five strikeouts. Broughton was nearly as stingy in the second game, scattering just three hits while striking out six.
While the arms were keeping the Saints at bay, the bats reeled off enough offense against Maryville.
The Gorloks converted a hit and error into two runs in the top of the second inning, and WU was off and running. Freshman
Joe Biagini fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fourth inning, gave Webster some breathing room. They added two more runs in the inning on back-to-back groundouts.
Additional insurance runs were tacked on in the seventh.
Biagini started the second-inning rally in the night with a one-out double. He lumbered home on a
Nathan Shelton single. Then, Shelton single-handedly manufactured another run. While you can't steal first, Shelton swiped the other eligible bags en route to scoring the game's second run. The steal of home was on the backend of a double steal. An RBI single by
Zach Little capped the scoring in the second.
Webster (19-10 overall, 16-0 SLIAC) added single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. The Gorloks will return to the diamond for Senior Day 7 p.m. Friday against Principia at GCS Ballpark.
QUOTES
Head Coach Bill Kurich
On the wins: "It's huge. Maryville has been a very good team since I came to Webster. They play us hard and are well coached. It was two solid, convincing wins."
On the pitching performances of Savage and Broughton: " When Broughton and Savage are throwing well, especially in the seven-inning games, we will need our bullpen one to two innings at most. (Pitching) Coach (Mike) Stawski mentioned they didn't allow the leadoff runner all game. They were dominant all night."
On the prospects of winning the SLIAC regular season: "We talk about it. We have five games in four days. If we treat the games individually, prepare right and take it one game at a time, we will be fine. To win all five games is a feat. Our No.1 goal is the top seed in the tournament."
On the prospects of running the table: "It's something we talk about. I could use all of the cliche's, but it's a goal of ours. We want to do it. If it doesn't happen, we didn't prepare to play up to our ability. We have Principia coming up and they are playing well. We have another tough game with Maryville and Eureka beat us last season. We know we have to play well (to win out), and we expect to play well."
