EUREKA, IL - The present and future was on full display Saturday as Webster hit 11 home runs in its sweep of Eureka, 19-3 and 13-3, in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) action.
Senior
Andrew Fuiten and freshman
Joe Biagini combined to hit eight long balls and 19 RBI in the two games. Fuiten connected on two in each game with his second home run setting a new single season mark. He now has 15 home runs this season. Biagini went deep for a career-high three times in the opener and with his single shot in the second game, moved into second on the single-season list with 12.
In addition to the single-season home run marks the pair have put an assault on, the race to the single-season RBI mark in down to a late sprint. Biagini is currently leading with 58, while Fuiten is right behind him with 57.
Webster scored in five of its seven plate appearances, including a 10-spot in the fifth en route to the 19-3 victory in the series opener.
Aaron Senzell continued his torrid hitting as of late, going 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored, while
Alex Raetzloff,
Kyle Starnes and
Nathan Shelton all had two hits.
Senior
Will Savage (6-2) earned the victory with five innings of work, allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits.
Fuiten and Biagini went back-to-back in the six-run seventh inning as the Gorloks broke open the game and eventually recorded the 13-3 victory. While the power duo was drawing all of the raves, junior
Dakota Huey went 4-for-4 with three runs scored.
Senior
Eric Broughton (5-2) allowed three runs (one earned) on two hits in five innings of work.
With the victories, Webster - ranked third in the latest Central Region rankings - is now 25-11 overall, 22-0 in the SLIAC. The 22 SLIAC victories set a new conference win mark, breaking the 21 Webster set a season ago. With the regular season title and conference win mark achieved, the Gorloks set their sights on an unbeaten conference record. WU will conclude its three-game series with Eureka 1 p.m. Sunday and then will finish their second Principia game Monday. Webster leads 3-1 in the bottom of the third inning when the game resumes.
