(St. Louis, Mo.) - The Webster Gorloks held a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh before the Maryville Saints rallied with four runs to take a
4-3 win on Friday afternoon at Maryville. With the loss the Gorloks and Saints will now play for the regular season title on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at Maryville.
WU (
20-11, 11-2 SLIAC) were held hitless through the first five innings before
Mandy VanVelkingburgh lined a double up the middle to lead off the sixth inning. After a sacrifice bunt to second from
Megan Sperry moverd VanVelkingburgh to third with one out
Dana Vahey lined a double to left field for the first run of the contest. Webster then proceeded to load the bases with an infield single by
Maria Hibbard and a hit batsmen to
Kelsey Washam. After a strikeout
Sam Dittman came through with a clutch two out two run single to left to make it 3-0.
After allowing a single in the first and second innings Sperry gave up only one hit over the next four innings. In the seventh though she ran into trouble allowing a pair of singles sandwiched around a double to make it 3-2. The Gorlok defense then committed an error on a bunt to put the winning run on first and
Gina Trapani was called upon but they committed another error which allowed the tying run to score and put the winning run at third with no out. After a ground out to short the Saints (22-14, 10-3 SLIAC) got the winning run on a single to left that glanced off Nancy LaRose's glove to end the game.
Sperry allowed four runs, two earned, on six hits with four punchouts and two walks snapping her six game winning streak and dropped her record to 10-5.
After the game at Maryville tomorrow morning Webster will now play Washington-St. Louis starting at 2 p.m. at Maryville University instead of the regularly scheduled of noon at Blackburn Park.
