Ref's Plea on 'Webster Vs. Weather': Nolo Contendre

Game Cancelled with 32 Minutes Remaining

Abysmal field conditions spurred the head referee to call the Webster University men's soccer game at Westminster College on October 27, with 32 minutes remaining.  With the game tied, 1-1, the referee trotted to the scorer's table after a save by Webster GK Pete Mothe (JR, Asociacion HS, Argentina) and declared the contest over.

Confusion reigned for some moments, since a minor scuffle after the save by Mothe immediately preceeded the referee's declaration.  Terry Logue, Westminster Sport Information Director, confirmed  the referee's decision was completed based on the deteriating condition of the field.

Despite steady rains for two days, the soccer double-header between Webster and Westminster's women and men's teams was kept as scheduled.  The women's contest was a league game and no make up date was available.  In addition, it was "Senior Night" for both Westminster squads.

Westminster took a 1-0 lead with eight minutes remaining in the first half.  Senior Andy Rudroff (DeSmet Jesuit HS, STL) tied the game at the 50:30 mark with what would have been his sixth goal.  Stopping the game with 32:30 remaining, made it a "no contest" since NCAA college soccer rules state that 70 minutes must be played for it to be an official contest.  All stats for the game are negated.

The game will not be made up since it was a "non-conference" contest.  The men play next on October 29 versus Eureka College at the Soccer Park as part of a makeup double-header.
