Gorloks split Maryville doubleheader

After winning the first game of their non-conference doubleheader with Maryville 5-1 Tuesday, Webster dropped the nightcap 11-7.

Junior Megan Sperry (3-2) earned the decision in both contests. The hurler surrendered a home run in the first inning of the opener, then held the Saints at bay for the rest of the contest in posting the victory. She allowed just two more hits with five strikeouts for the rest of the game. The nightcap was a tad bit different.

She entered a tie game in the top of the seventh and was saddled with loss after yielding four runs in the inning. Webster allowed two big innings in the second game defeat, both started with a fielding error, and the seventh inning was one of those innings. The loss took some of the luster off her performance at the plate. She went 4-for-5 with an RBI and run scored.

Following the error, MU loaded the bases with a single and infield walk. The bases were promptly unloaded with a homerun.

Not willing to go away quietly, Webster fought back in the seventh. They loaded the bases with one out and the heart of the lineup coming to the plate. However, a fielder's choice and pop up ended a game that featured 18 runs, 24 hits and 11 errors.

The game started like the seventh inning, with an error. Eventually a combination of five Maryville hits and three Webster errors led to four first-inning runs. The Saints tacked on another run in the second to take the 5-0 lead before the Gorloks started their trek back. WU took advantage of three Maryville miscues for three runs.

Webster claimed the lead with a run in the third and two in fourth. The lead was short-lived as MU tallied two in the fifth, and the Gorloks pulled even with a run in their half of the fifth to set up the seventh.

Seniors Mandy Van Velkinburgh and Dana Vahey, along with junior Cassie Mosier all had two hits for Webster.

A three-run first inning in the opener got the ball rolling for Webster in the opener. Two walks and a fielder's choice had the bases loaded. Van Velkinburgh brought a run home on a fielder's choice, and back-to-back singles by Allie Park and Samantha Dittman brought home two more runs.

Vahey opened the fifth with a solo home run, then scored Mosier from third with a single in the sixth. Mosier's two-out triple sparked the rally.

Webster (4-8) will host Coe 4 p.m. Friday in non-conference action.
