TOWN & COUNTRY - Needing a sweep to reclaim the lead in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference race, Webster split with first-place Maryville Friday. The Gorloks earned the victory in the opener, 3-1, and then fell in the nightcap, 1-0. The split leaves WU one game behind the Saints with two games to play in the race for the top seed in the upcoming SLIAC Tournament.
Webster will host Blackburn 1 p.m. Saturday at Blackburn Park, while Maryville will take on MacMurray Sunday.
The Gorloks utilized one hit and two Maryville errors to score three unearned runs in the fifth inning. After
Megan Sperry reached on a one-out error, a two-out double by
Kelsey Washam knotted the score at one. Mandy VanVelkinburgh reached on a walk and then followed Washam to the plate on an outfield error.
Sperry (9-5) continued her brilliance in the circle, allowing one unearned run on three hits.
There wasn't much offense in the second game of the doubleheader as
Gina Trapani was in a groove from the outset. She carried a no-hitter into the fifth, but the Saints finally got to her and they made it pay off. A leadoff single followed by back-to-back sacrifice bunts moved the runner to third. She would score an a double that produced the game's lone run.
Trapani (7-5) allowed one run on five hits with five strikeouts.
