Track Has Smashing Good Time at IC Classic

Records fell in bunches as the Webster University men's and women's track and field team made its third trip to Jacksonville, IL, this winter, to compete in the Illinois College Alumni Classic on February 15.  After breaking five records in each of their last two meets, the Gorloks doubled their pleasure by smashing 10 school records on the evening.

For the women, the Distance Medley team of Julie Greenough (JR, Lutie HS, MO), Lauren Hoover (FR, Houston HS, MO), Amy Stanke (FR, St. Bede HS, IL), and Eroica Stackhouse (JR, Tipton HS, IN) beat the old Webster time by 25 seconds, finishing first in the event in 13:57.92.  Greenough broke the record in the 1000M run by 14 seconds with a 3:31.09, good enough for fourth place.  Stackhouse finished fourth in the 3000M run with a time of 11:36.  In the 400 M dash, Hoover set a school record of 1:05.99, finishing sixth.  Kristen McDowell high jumped 1.47M and wound up fourth in the event.

Jenny Howard (SO, Duchesne HS, MO) missed finishing first in the 60M dash for a third consecutive week, but took second place with a school record tme of 7.98.  Breaking the 8.0 barrier for the first time, Howard was beaten out by Illinois College All-American runner Melissa Norville, who ran a 7.91.  Howard also set a record time in the 200M dash, running a 27.53 and finishing sixth.

On the men's side, the Distance Medley team of Greg Fletcher (SO, Francis Howell HS, MO), Dan Henkey (SR, Affton HS, MO), Clayton Roll (FR, Quincy HS, IL), and Charles Whitehead (FR, Carthage HS, MO),  finished second with a Webster record time of 11:06.63.  The 4 X 400 relay team of Fletcher, Aaron Oberneufemann (SR, Mt. Olive HS, IL), Roll, and Zach Zurfluh-Cunningham (SO, Windsor HS, finished third with a 3:39.68.

Oberneufemann was second in the high jump with a 1.82M leap.  Zurfluh-Cunningham broke the Webster mark in the 400M dash with a time of 52:63, and finishing in fifth place.  Whitehead added to the record-breaking day, running a record time of 2:42.82 in the 1000M run, and finishing second.   In the 3000M run, Henkey was another record-breaker at 9:12.02, and good enough for a third place finish in the event.  Making it an even 10 records on the day, Zurfluh-Cunningham ran a 23:56 in the 200M dash as he finished ninth in the field.

The was the final indoor meet for the teams, who will finally take to the outdoors on March 16, at the Central Methodist University Open, in Fayette, MO.
