(St. Louis, Mo.) – The Webster University men’s basketball squad suffered its second straight defeat this weekend fall to the fifth ranked Augustana Vikings, 84-65 on Sunday evening in the Webster/Washington University Classic at Webster University.
The game was tightly contested early at 6-6 before the Vikings (3-0) went on a 12-0 run in which they hit a pair of threes and held WU (2-2) without a bucket for over seven minutes. In that stretch the Gorloks missed eight straight shots and turned the ball over a couple of times. Webster would fight back and get as close as 24-22 with less than seven minutes remaining in the half but a 7-0 run by Augustana pushed the lead back to nine and the Gorloks would get no closer than six points the rest of the way as the Vikings went into the break with a 35-28 advantage. Luke Niebrugge led the way for WU with seven points in the opening frame while Darin Hoggatt added six and Ryan Turk and Brad Robinson had five apiece. Augustana’s Jordan Delp led all scorers with 12 points in the stanza.
In the second half it was all Vikings as they stormed out of the break scoring 14 of the first 20 points to push their lead to 49-34 with 16:44 to play. The Gorloks would cut the lead to 12 on a three pointer by Steve Hrdlicka but would get no closer as AC controlled the rest of the game pushing its lead to as large as 24 before settling for the 19 point margin of victory.
Hoggatt finished the game with 14 points to lead Webster while Niebrugge added 11 and Robinson chipped in with nine.
Delp led five Vikings in double digits with a game-high 22 points. Chandlor Collins and Jeff Becker contributed 12 points each and Dain Swetalla and Brett Wessels dropped in 10 apiece.
