Patience paid off for the women's soccer team as Webster University beat Blackburn College, 2-0, at the Soccer Park on October 13. The Gorloks, ranked eighth in the NCAA III Central region, played ball control offense while scoring twice to secure the victory.
Facing a defensive shell employed by the Beavers that packed 8-10 players inside their penalty box, Webster entered the half tied 0-0. Christy Capkovic (JR, Mehlville HS, STL) broke the scoreless deadlock at the 48:35 mark off a feed from Kelsey McClure (JR, Hickman HS, MO).
The goal was the 20th for Capkovic, marking her second 20-goal season, and making her the first Gorlok to reach that level twice. Capkovic is currently second in the NCAA III in goals and points scored per game. Teammate McClure is sixth in the NCAA III in assists per game.
Capkovic added her 21st goal at 68:50 off a pass from Lindsey Owens (SO, St. Dominic's HS, STL)to complete the scoring. Freshman GK Shelby Wade (Francis Howell HS, STL) picked up her seventh win in the nets.
Webster defeated Blackburn earlier this season, 6-0. While the defensive strategy by Blackburn limited the Gorloks scoring, it generated no opportunities for them as they had no shots for the game.
Next up for the team is a trip to Chicago to face Elmhurst College on October 18. Webster is now 9-2 on the season.
