Taking a slight diversion from its quest for a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title, the Webster University women's volleyball ventured five miles down Big Bend Blvd to take on the #3 nationally-ranked Washington University Bears. The Gorloks, with a starting lineup of four freshmen and two seniors, lost to the Bears, 3-0., on October 26.
Webster lost in straight sets, 25-12, 25-13, 25-21, but the Gorloks, especially their freshmen, got some quality time against a perennial NCAA III powerhouse. The experience will help the Gorloks prepare for the upcoming SLIAC Tournament. The Gorloks played a strong defensive match, but had a tough time scoring against the taller Bear lineup.
Jordan Vehlewald (FR, Lafayette HS), a SLIAC Volleyball Player of the Week along with Liz Abraham (SO, Hermann HS, MO) , led Webster with seven kills. The Gorloks are 16-10 overall and 13-2 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Webster has only one regular season match remaining, a visit to SLIAC foe Westminster College on November 1.
Webster will hold either the #1 or #2 seed in the SLIAC Tournament on November 5. A #1 seed would make the Gorloks the host, with the tournament taking place at Grant Gymnasium.
