A Flip, A Whip...and Women's Volleyball Hosts SLIAC Tourney

Victories come in many ways, as the Webster University women's volleyball found out in a 30-hour span. After winning at Westminster College, 3-0, on November 1, the Gorloks will be hosting the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on November 5.  Coach Merry Graf had won a flip of a coin a day earlier to determine who would be hosting the tournament if Webster, indeed, wound up tied for first place in the SLIAC.

With the win over Westminster College, Webster wound up in a virtual tie with Greenville Collge (IL)...after all the SLIAC tie-breaking procedures had been applied.  The next step was a coin toss, carried out by teleconference.  The Gorloks players leaned towards 'tails,' but Graf went with her instinct, and her instinct, like the fallen coin, was 'heads.'

The Gorloks spared any dramatics by winning the Westminster match in straight sets, 25-21, 25-20, and 25-21.  Webster finished 14-2 in the SLIAC and in first place for the fifth time in seven years.  The Gorloks have racked up a 96-9 regular season record in the SLIAC during that period.

Webster will meet Westminster in first round action at Grant Gymnasium on November 5.  A win would advance them to the champiohship round against either Principia College (IL) or Greenville.
