After watching a 2-0 halftime lead disappear, the men's soccer team pulled it out in overtime as Webster defeated Millikin University, 3-2, at Bloomington, IL, on September 11. Clint Carder (JR, DeSoto HS, MO), who led the Gorloks with 15 goals in 2010, scored his first at 6:51 of the first overtime period to send Webster home a winner.
Webster's win came in the second round of the Illinois Wesleyan "Clash of the Titans." The Gorloks grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first half, scoring first on an unassisted goal by Bryan Enger (Mehlville HS) at the 8:44 mark. The goal was Enger's second of the season. Freshman Pat McCaffery (Bishop DuBourg HS) made it 2-0 just three minutes later, with his second goal of the season also. Enger and McCaffery lead the team in goals.
After dominating first half play the Gorloks, who had outshot the Big Blue 14-6, saw Millikin take control in the second half, outshooting Webster 11-6 and scoring two goals in the final five minutes of regulation play. In the first OT period, Michael Dennis (JR, Carbondale HS, IL) sent a clearing pass out of the defensive zone that Carder pounced on and fired in for the game winner. With the teams playing a 'golden goal' format, Carder's goal ended the contest.
Brian Woodward (FR, Eureka HS) had his first start in goal for Webster, and picked up his first victory. He allowed two goals, and had six saves as Millikin had 18 shots total and eight on goal.
The Gorloks improved to 2-3 on the season. They travel to Terre Haute, IN, on September 14, to take on Rose-Hulman Institute. The team heads to Louisville, KY, to open St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on September 17, as it faces Spalding University.
