Volleyball Downs Spalding, Falls to Hanover

SLIAC Streak at 10 Wins

Staying alive in the race for first in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the Webster University volleyball team defeated Spalding University in Louisville, KY, on October 20.  Playing a second match against non-conference foe Hanover College (IL), the Gorloks lost a hard fought match in the tie-breaker set.

The Gorloks kept their SLIAC win streak alive, now at 10 straight, with the 3-0 win over Spalding (25-19, 25-20, 25-22).  In the win, Webster also kept its string alive of not losing a single set throughout the streak.  Webster is 12-1 in the SLIAC.  Greenville College (IL) sits in first place, one win ahead of the Gorloks at 13-1.  

Against Spalding, Sam Kersting (SO, Lindbergh HS, MO) led the Gorloks with 11 kills, and had three solo blocks and two block assists.  Jenny Howard (SO, Duchesne HS, MO) had 10 kills, one ace, and eight digs.  Jordan Vehlewald (SO, Lafayette HS, MO) led Webster with 11 digs.

In the day's finale, Webster lost to Hanover, 12-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-23, and 11-15.  Emily Ratkewicz (SO, Granite City HS, IL) came up big in the match with13 kills, two solo blocks and six block assists.  Kersting has 13 kills also, and had five aces.  Howard had another outstanding match with 13 kills, leading Webster with 10 digs, and four block assists. 

The Gorloks are 15-9 overall.  Webster is back in action on October 23 at Fontbonne University.
