Men's Soccer Slips By Spalding, 3-0

Box Score The Webster University men's soccer team improved to 2-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 3-0 win over Spalding University, on October 5, at the Soccer Park.  A Clint Carder (SR, DeSoto HS, MO) goal on a PK at the 48:43 mark in the second half was all the scoring the Gorloks needed.

Both teams battled through a driving rain for a scoreless first half, with Webster holding a 6-2 edge in the limited number of shots.  Carder out-dribbled two defenders before being taken down just inside the Spalding penalty box by a third.  Not missing an opportunity, Carder buried the penalty kick inside the top right corner of the goal.

The Gorloks dominated play for most of the second half and broke through on goals by Mike Wells (SO, McCluer North HS, MO) and Carlos Espinosa (JR, Eureka HS, MO).  Wells hooked a free kick, from just outside the penalty box, inside the right goalpost, at 60 minute mark.  Espinosa followed up with a rocket just under the crossbar, off a pass by Agustin Villalba (SR, American School, Ecuador), at the 64:30 mark.

Brian Woodward (SO, Eureka HS, MO) had his second consecutive shutout in goal while picking up the win.  The shutout was the third straight for the Webster defense.  Webster held a final 16-2 edge in shots for the game.

Webster is 6-4-1 overall.  The Gorloks continue play in the SLIAC as they travel to Fulton, MO. to take on Westminster College on October 9.
