The Webster University volleyball team took on the two teams favored to compete with the Gorloks for the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title...and came away with a split. Webster defeated Spalding University, 3-0, but fell in the second match, 0-3, to Greenville College (IL), on September 15.
Webster, Greenville, and Spalding finished 1-2-3 in the SLIAC coaches pre-season poll, with Greenville receiving three first place votes, just two less than the Gorloks five votes. The matches were played at Elsah, IL, as Principia College played host to the quad. Webster and Greenville tied for the regular season title in 2011, at 14-2 in conference, but the Gorloks knocked off the Panthers in the SLIAC Tournament to take the championship.
Both matches only went three sets as the victors ground out wins in close fashion. Webster downed Spalding, 25-18, 25-18, 25-20, and the Gorloks fell to Greenville, 19-25, 20-25, 20-25. With the split, Webster is 2-1 in the SLIAC, and 3-6 overall.
The Gorloks continue play in the SLIAC, first travelling to Blackburn College (IL) on September 18, then are back home on September 22 to take on Fontbonne College and Westminster College, at Grant Gymnasium
