Webster Drops First-Place Showdown

Box Score In a battle for first place in the conference, Webster University's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision (25-23, 25-21, 25-14) at Greenville College Tuesday (Oct. 29).
 
As a result, the Gorloks will need help to claim the top seed for the St.. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament. Webster is 13-2 in the SLIAC (21-8 overall) with three conference matches left. Greenville is 15-1 and owns the tie breaker with a pair of wins against the Gorloks.
 
Webster had hitting percentage of .378 and .300, respectively, in the first two games, above its season average of .212.
 
All-American Sam Kersting (St. Louis, MO / Lindbergh) led the team with 10 kills. She began the week ranked 56th in the nation in NCAA Division III in hitting percentage. Kersting also is the national leader in blocks and 97th nationally in points.
 
Junior Kristen McDowell (Staunton, IL / Staunton) contributed nine kills and a .438 hitting percentage. That is the fourth time this season she has hit .400 or better in a match where she had at least 10 attacks.
 
Junior Allie O'Toole (St. Louis, MO / Lutheran South) was credited with 27 assists, her third-highest total of the season, and highest in a three-set match. She had 41 in a five-set match against Westminster and 28 in a five-set match against Trinity (Texas).
 
Freshman Katie O'Toole (St. Louis, MO / Lutheran South) racked up 17 digs, the 12th time in 13 matches that she has reached double figures in that category. She added a season-high three service aces, tops on the team.
 
Webster plays a pair of conference matches Saturday (Nov. 2) in Clayton, Mo., the first against Iowa Wesleyan, the second against MacMurray. Its regular season finale is Wednesday (Nov. 6) at Westminster.
