Webster Shines on Defense in Defeat

Box Score Webster University's volleyball team saw its eight-match win streak come to an end at Millikin University (Ill.), 25-16, 22-25, 28-26, 25-18, Friday (Oct. 4). This is the fourth time in 17 matches this season that the Gorloks have played beyond the third set.

Defense was the headline for this match as Webster amassed nine solo blocks and 18 assisted blocks. That tied the second-highest ever total by the Gorloks in a four-game match. Webster had 18 total blocks [team totals count half of assisted blocks] in a Sept. 11, 2006, match against Illinois College. Both matches were topped by Webster's 24 total blocks this season at Rose-Hulman (Ind.).

Junior Emily Ratkewicz (Granite City, IL / Granite City) had 11 blocks (6 solo, 5 assisted), one shy of her own school record for four-game match, set against Spalding (Ky.) Oct. 22, 2011.

Junior Sam Kersting (St. Louis, MO / Lindbergh) added seven blocks (3 solo, 4 assisted), her second-highest total of the season. She had 11 blocks against Rose-Hulman on Sept. 7. Kersting has 19 blocks in her last three matches.

Freshman Katie O'Toole, filling in at the libero position, came up with 27 digs, highest by a Gorlok this season. The previous high was 21 by regular libero Megan Morrison in the season opener Aug. 31.

Kersting and junior Jenny Howard (Florissant, MO / Duchesne) each topped the Gorloks with 12 kills. This is the fourth time in five matches that Kersting had 10 or more kills. She had nine kills the day before against Illinois Wesleyan.

Webster compiled 47 assists, two shy of its season high, accomplished twice. Junior Ashley Fawcett (Surprise, AZ / Valley Vista) had a team-high 22 assists.

Following losses this season, Webster has reeled off, in order, win streaks of three, four and eight matches.

The Gorloks (13-4 overall, 8-1 SLIAC) are back in action at home Tuesday night with matches against Fontbonne and Maryville (Mo.). starting at 6 pm at Grant Gym.
