Box Score Webster University's volleyball team dropped its season opener, 3-1, to the No. 7 ranked team in the nation. Host Washington University (Mo.) came out on top 25-16, 25-14, 23-25, and 25-15.
 
Jenny Howard (Florissant, MO / Duchesne), 2012 conference Player of the Year, led Webster with 10 kills. She moved up to 16th place on the school's all-time list for career kills.
 
Other statistical leaders for the Gorloks were Megan Morrison (St. Louis, MO / Lutheran South) with 21 digs and Allie O'Toole (St. Louis, MO / Lutheran South) with 16 assists.
 
Webster, with six returning starters, was the pre-season favorite to win its conference, according to a poll of coaches in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Last season, the team received a berth in the NCAA national tournament for the sixth time in school history.
 
The Gorloks' next match is Wednesday (Sept. 4) at Illinois College at 7 pm.
