Webster Smells Like a Rose in Opener

Gorloks Win Opener for 9th Time in 10 Years

Box Score Amy Schield scored the lone goal to propel Webster University women's soccer team to a season-opening 1-0 win against Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (Ind.). The win marked the ninth time in 10 years the Gorloks have opened the season with a victory.

Schield (Belleville, IL / Belleville West), a defender, scored at the 79-minute mark with an assist from midfielder Michelle Scally (St. Louis, MO / Rosati-Kain). Webster outshot Rose-Hulman, 14-6.

Goalie Jessica Davis (Belleville, IL / Belleville West) made three saves for the shutout, the 16th of her career. Last season, Davis recorded 14 shutouts in 22 games.

Davis and Schield, along with Ally Nikolaus (St. Louis, MO / St. Joseph's Academy), are the team's three returning all-conference first-team selections from last season. They are among 11 returning starters for a squad picked to win the conference, according to a poll of coaches in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The last time Webster opened its season with a shutout was in 2008, a 3-0 win against Millikin (Ill.). The Gorloks are back in action Saturday (Aug. 31) against Franklin (Ind.) at 3 pm.
