Gorloks Debut Three-Peat Bid with Sweep

Box Score Webster University's volleyball squad opened its quest for a three-peat with a 3-0 sweep at Iowa Wesleyan College in a conference match Wednesday (Sept. 11). Game scores were 25-21, 25-19, and 25-14.
 
The Gorloks are aiming to win their third consecutive, seventh in eight years, St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship.  They are the pre-season favorite to do so, according to a poll of SLIAC coaches.
 
With the win, Webster's record improved to 5-2, its best seven-match start since the 2008 squad had an identical start.
 
The Gorloks tallied 66 digs, second-highest total this season in a three-game match. The highest is 70 against Illinois College a week ago.
 
Junior Jordan Vehlewald (Wildwood, MO / Lafayette) paced the squad with18 digs, followed by junior Megan Morrison (St. Louis, MO / Lutheran South) with 17, and junior Jenny Howard (Florissant, MO / Duchesne) with 16. The last time Webster had three players with 15 or more digs in a match was Nov. 3, 2012, versus Greenville.
 
Howard led the team with 11 kills (.286 hitting percentage). Junior All-American Sam Kersting (St. Louis, MO / Lindbergh) had seven kills and a .412 hitting percentage.
 
Junior setter Ashley Fawcett (Surprise, AZ / Valley Vista) tallied a team-high 20 assists.
 
Tonight was the start of nine consecutive conference matches. Webster returns to action Saturday (Sept. 14) at Elsah, Ill., to face Principia and Westminster.
