Box Score Webster University dropped its home opener, 3-0, in a matchup of two teams predicted to finish at the top of the conference. An estimated crowd of 300 was on hand at Grant Gym.
 
Webster, the pre-season favorite to win the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, was bested by Greenville College (Ill.), picked to finish second, according to a poll of SLIAC coaches. Game scores were 25-17, 27-25 and 25-15.
 
The Gorloks have won six of the last seven conference tournament championships, the lone exception being Greenville in 2010.
 
Webster's season record is 7-3. This is the fourth of nine consecutive conference matches for the Gorloks. The next one is Friday (Sept. 20) at Eureka, followed by matches Saturday (Sept. 21) at Blackburn and a neutral match in Carlinville against Fontbonne.
