Gorloks Beat Griffs, Then Fall to #4 Washington U

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Webster University volleyball team split a doubleheader, beating Fontbonne University, 3-0, and falling to nationally ranked Washington University, 3-0, on October 1.  The Gorloks improved to 5-2 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with the win over the Griffins, at Grant Gymnasium.

Webster won in convincing fashion against Fontbonne, winning 25-17, 25-15, 25-14.  Fontbonne came into the match at 4-4 in the SLIAC, looking to move into the conference top four.  The Gorloks rest in third place with their 5-2 mark, one game behind second place Westminster.

In the Washington U match, the Gorloks kept within striking distance in all three sets, but never could break through against the Bears, a perennial power ranked #4 in the NCAA III.  In the first set, Webster trailed, 20-18.  After a Wash U timeout, the Bears extended their lead to 22-20, leading to a Webster timeout.  Wash U took the final three points for a 25-20 final.

In set two with Wash U leading, 5-3, the Bears went on a 7-1 run to make it 12-4.  Webster wouldn't go away though, and was down 18-12 and 21-14 before a Gorlok timeout.  Webster came out of the break with three straight points to close to 21-17, but would be no closer as Wash U won, 25-19.

With Wash U ahead just by a point in set three, 6-5, the Bears went on a 10-1 run to extend their lead to 16-6.  With the score 17-8, Webster went on a run of its own, 7-1, to close to 18-15.  Wash U extended its lead to 24-18, but the Gorloks ran off three points to make it, 24-21.  The Bears then scored the game winner for a 25-21 final.

The Gorloks were without senior hitter Jenny Howard (SR, Florissant, MO/Duchesne HS) for the Washington University match.  Howard saw limited play against Fontbonne, but illness kept her out of the match with the Bears.

It was 'Dig Pink' night at Grant Gymnasium, as the Gorloks raised funds for the fight against breast cancer.  Activities included a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction of themed baskets.  All donations will go to the 'Side Out Foundation.'  People still wishing to donate can do so at https://www.side-out.org/cb/campaigns/campaign/9284

The Gorloks are 9-8 overall as they now go full swing in the SLIAC schedule.  Webster will host a 'quint' on October 4 as they host four other SLIAC squads for a full day of interleague competition.  The Gorloks will take on Principia College (IL) and Iowa Wesleyan College.  It will also be Senior Day at Grant Gym, as nine Gorloks will be honored.
