Gorlok Comeback Sets Up SLIAC Twin-Kill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 With a proverbial "barnburner" win getting them off to a good start on the day, the Webster University volleyball team defeated Principia College (IL), 3-2, and Iowa Wesleyan College, 3-1, on October 4 at Grant Gymnasium.  The two wins improved the Gorloks' record in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to 7-2.

In the opener, the Gorloks had to scratch and claw to come from behind to beat a resilient Panthers squad.  Webster won the opener, 25-22, but lost the second set, 22-25 and Principia was posed to win the match after winning another hard-fought set, 29-27 in the third.

Webster had a much easier time tying the match up in the fourth set, 25-15, before squeaking by, 17-15, in the tie-breaker set for the win.

The Gorloks had a well-balanced attack for the match with Sam Kersting (SR, St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh HS) and Rachel Nelson (JR, Papillion, NE/Papillion LaVista-South HS) each having 14 kills.  Andrea Dwiggins (SR, St. Charles, MO/St. Charles HS) and Kristen McDowell (SR, Staunton, IL/Staunton HS) each chipped in with 13 and 11 kills, respectively.

Jordan Vehlewald (SR, Wildwood, MO/Lafayette HS) led the Gorloks with 23 digs, her fourth highest total of the season, and Lauren McCauley (JR, O'Fallon, IL/O'Fallon) had 19 for the match.  Allie O'Toole (SR, St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South HS) had 27 assists and Katie O'Toole (SO, St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South HS) had 22 for the Gorloks.

Against Iowa Wesleyan, after stumbling out of the block and losing the first set, 21-25, Webster won three straight in convincing fashion, 25-14, 25-8, 25-15.  Jenny Howard (SR, Florissant, MO/Duchesne HS) had 20 kills for the match and a sizzling .645 attack percent.  Howard also had 11 digs for the match.  Webster had a .321 percentage as a team.

Allie O'Toole had 28 assists to lead Webster and Vehlewald had 21 digs.

It was 'Senior Day' at Grant Gym, and Webster honored its nine seniors.  In addition to Kersting, Dwiggins, McDowell, Vehlewald, Allie O'Toole, and Howard, Ashley Fawcett (Surprise, AZ/Valley Vista HS), Kallie Federhofer (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South HS), and Megan Morrison (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South HS) were recognized for their contributions to the Gorlok volleyball program.

Webster is 11-8 overall on the season.  The Gorloks travel to Carlinville, IL, on October 7 to face Blackburn College and are back home on October 10 to host Eureka College.
