Webster 3-0 in SLIAC After Win Over Spalding

Box Score The Webster University men's soccer team ran its St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference record to 3-0, with a come from behind, 2-1 win over Spalding University (KY) on October 9, at the Soccer Park.  Jacob Stieb scored the game winning goal to cap the comeback and Brian Woodward became Webster's career win leader in goal with the victory..

Stieb (SR, Highland, IL/Highland HS) scored what proved to be the game winner on a head ball at 78:36 in the second half.  Mike Wells (SR, Florissant, MO/McCluer North HS) made a leaping head pass of a loose ball about to cross the end line, back to Stieb, who was positioned right in front of the goal.

Seconds earlier, Spalding had fouled Webster 25 yards out, to the right of the Spalding goal.  Brendan Shields (SO, St. Peters, MO/Ft. Zumwalt East HS) took the free kick that would wind up being passed back by Wells for the goal.

Webster had tied the game minutes earlier when Shields scored the tying goal with a blast from near the penalty spot that deflected off a Spalding defender and past the Golden Eagle goalie.  That goal was also assisted by Wells, who has a team-leading six assists and leads the team with 14 points.

The Gorloks outshot the Golden Eagles, 6-3, in the first half, but trailed at the break, 1-0.  The Webster offense came alive in the second half, outshooting Spalding, 11-2, with five of the shots on goal.

Woodward (SR, Eureka, MO/Eureka HS) picked up the win in goal for the Gorloks.  Woodward quietly became Webster's career win leader in goal, winning his 26th game.  He passed Bob Stevens (1991-94) who had won 25 games for the Gorloks.  Woodward improved to 2-4 on the season with the victory.

Webster is 5-8-1 overall.  The Gorloks are back at home on October 14 as they host MacMurray College (IL).  It is 'Pack the House' night at the Soccer Park.  All Webster student athletes, students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to come out and support the efforts of the Webster women's and men's soccer teams that evening.
