Gorloks Fit to be Tied in Home Opener vs. Edgewood

Box Score Coming off a tough loss on the road, the Webster University women's soccer team settled for a tie in its home opener vs. Edgewood College (WI) on August 30, at the Soccer Park.  Rachael Ainsworth and Jessica Davis shared the shutout in goal for the Gorloks.

The Gorloks best chance to score, in an otherwise uneventful first, came when Allie Ferguson (SO, Highland, IL/Highland HS) was pulled down just inside the Edgewood box with 14 minutes remaining in the half.  Coach Luigi Scire elected for senior Freddie Brandt (SR, Davis, CA/Davis HS) to take the penalty kick, but it was deflected wide by Edgewood goalie, Victoria Fortney.

As Brandt began to take the kick, Fortney dove right, guessing correctly that Brandt was going to that side, and deflected the shot.

Through the second half and two 10-minute overtime periods, neither team had a great chance at breaking the deadlock.  Webster wound up the game with a 9-3 edge in shots.

Ainsworth (Salt Lake City, UT/Salt Lake School for Science Education) threw a blank in her first collegiate half, and Davis (SR, Belleville, IL/Belleville West HS) shutout Edgewood for the final 65 minutes of play.

Webster is 0-1-1 and is off for a week before hosting Benedictine University (IL) and Rhodes College (TN) on September 6-7 at the Soccer Park.
