Box Score 2 The Webster University volleyball team gained a split in a quad-meet at Fulton, MO, losing to host Westminster College, 3-0, and defeating Spalding University, 3-1. The split left the Gorloks at 4-2 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
In the opener, Webster lost a close first set, 23-25, and then fell 17-25 in the second. The Gorloks lost another battle in the third set, 25-27, and the match. The loss snapped a 22-match win streak against Westminster that dated back to October 31, 2003, when the Blue Jays last defeated Webster, 3-2.
The Gorloks came back to win their second match of the day vs. Spalding. Webster had an easy time in the first set, winning 25-12, and went up 2-0 with a 25-19 win in the second. The Golden Eagles came alive in the third set as they battled the Gorloks to a 27-25 decision. Another hard fought match ensued in the fourth set, but Webster prevailed, 26-24.
Against Westminster Rachel Nelson (Papillion, NE/Papillion LaVista-South HS) had nine kills and a .400 hitting average to lead the Gorloks. Allie O'Toole (SR, St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South HS) had a team-high 18 assists and Jordan Vehlewald (SR, Wildwood, MO/Lafayette HS) a team-high 19 digs.
Individual stats for the Spalding match were not available.
Webster is 8-7 overall and will be home on October 1 to host Fontbonne University and Washington University. It will be 'Dig Pink' night at Grant Gymnasium and various fund-raising activities to help increase awareness of, and fight breast cancer.
