Box Score 2 The Webster University volleyball team finished the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Tournament with a pair of losses. The Gorloks fell to Loras College (IA) and St. Norbert College (WI), 3-1 in each match.
Webster fell to Loras, 25-22, 14-25, 22-25, and 25-27. The Gorloks were down in the first set, 10-6, but turned a 9-2 run into a 15-12 lead. Loras kept it close, but Webster would never relinquish the lead as it won the set, 25-22. In the second set, the Gorloks took a 3-0 lead but the DuHawks went on a 16-4 run to break the set wide open and win 25-14.
In set three, Webster once again opened with a 3-0 lead with Loras tying it up at 6-6. The teams exchanged points and were tied at 19-19 before Loras reeled off three straight points to go up 22-19. Webster would close to within one, at 23-22, but would lost the set, 25-22.
The fourth set was a heartbreaker for the Gorloks. After the scored bounced back and forth throughout, Webster ran off four points to turn a 16-15 lead to 20-15. Kills by Jory Siebenmorgen (JR, Eureka, MO/Eureka HS) and Rachel Nelson (SR, Papillion, NE/LaVista South HS), a service ace by Katie O'Toole (JR, St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South HS), and another kill by Nelson gave Webster the lead.
Disaster struck with Webster holding a 24-17 lead and needing one point for the set, as the DuHawks ran off eight straight points to take a 25-24 lead. Webster would tie it at 25-25, but Loras finished off the set and the match with the final two points. Loras, a member of the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, are 20-12. The DuHawks have won 8 of 10 and were 3-1 in tournament with their only loss to #9 ranked host Wisconsin-Whitewater.
Siebenmorgen and Nelson each led with 10 kills in the match. Jilli Zimpfer (FR, St. Charles, MO/St. Charles HS) had 20 assists with Kelsey Hamann (FR, Waterloo, IL/Waterloo HS) chipping in with 17. O'Toole had 24 digs to lead Webster and Maria Soffner (SO, Creve Coeur, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) had 17.
Tied, 13-13, when the Gorloks made their move, pulling ahead, 20-16. Webster still led, 21-17, when the Green Knights closed to within one at 21-20. After a Webster timeout, St. Norbert took at 22-21 lead. A kill by Siebenmorgen, a St. Norbert attack error, and a service ace by Soffner gave Webster a 24-22 lead. A Samantha Budrovich (FR, St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South HS) kill finished off the 25-23 set win.
The Green Knights took control in the second set and tied the match with a 25-17 win. Down 7-2 in the third set, Webster pulled to a 15-12 lead, but St. Norbert roared back and would win the set, 25-23, to take a 2-1 lead. The Green Knights wore down the Gorloks in the fourth set and led from start to finish, winning 25-13, and taking the match 3-1.
Budrovich led Webster with 10 kills in the match and Zimpfer had 21 assists. O'Toole had 23 digs and Soffner added 18 for the Gorloks.
Nelson was named to the Wisconsin-Whitewater 2015 All-Tournament Team for her efforts in the four matches.
The Gorloks are 14-14 overall with the losses. St. Norbert, located in De Pere, WI, is a member of the Midwest Conference. They are 11-15 on the season. Webster travels to Fulton, MO, on October 27 to resume play in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a match at Westminster College.
