Volleyball Loses To #3 Ranked Washington U

Box Score The Webster University volleyball team lost at Washington University, 3-0, on October 29 in Clayton, MO.  The perennial powerhouse Bears came into the contest ranked #3 nationally in the NCAA III at 28-2. 

Webster took a 3-0, then 4-1 lead to open the first set, then extended the lead to 7-2 before a Washington U timeout.  The Bears rallied and took their first lead, 13-12.  Webster would tie it at 14-14 but Washington U would regain the lead and continue to build until winning the set, 25-18.  Jory Siebenmorgen (JR, Eureka, MO/Eureka HS) had three kills for the Gorloks in the set, and added four digs.  Katie O'Toole (JR, St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South HS) had five digs and Kelsey Hamann (FR, Waterloo, IL/Waterloo HS) led Webster with four assists.

The Gorloks took an early lead again in the second set, 3-2.  The Bears would pull ahead and leading 7-6, had four straight points to extend their lead to 11-6.  After a Webster point, Washington U would take five straight to take command of the set at 16-7.  The Bears would go on to win, 25-13.  Rachel Nelson (SR, Papillion, NE/LaVista South HS) had three kills for Webster.

In the third set, Webster once again would take an early lead, going up 3-1 on a Siebenmorgen kill.  The Gorloks still led at 6-3 before the Bears tied it at 6-6, then took a 9-6 lead with a six point run.  The Gorloks hung in there, with a kill by Emily Knowles (JR, Belleville, IL/Mascoutah HS) closing the gap to 10-11.  Washington U made it a 15-10 lead, though, and despite a late run by Webster, closed out the match with a 25-17 win in the third set. 

Siebenmorger wound up with five kills and Nelson with four.  O'Toole led with nine digs and Maria Soffner (SO, Creve Coeur, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) had eight.  Hamann led the Gorloks with seven assists.

Washington U came into the match as a winner of 16 of its last 17 contests, with its only loss coming to #2 ranked Emory University.  They improved to 28-3 with the win.

Webster is 14-16 overall on the season.  The Gorloks travel to Louisville, KY, on October 31 to face Spalding University.  Webster is back home on November 3 for Senior Night, when Blackburn College will be visiting Grant Gymnasium.
