Men's Soccer Pulls Out 3-2 Win Over Eureka

Box Score Staring at the possibility of a fifth overtime game in its last seven, the Webster University men's soccer team pulled out a 3-2 win over Eureka College with a goal by Austin Pierce, with two minutes remaining in regulation.  The win kept the Gorloks undefeated in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

For Pierce (JR, O'Fallon, MO/Francis Howell Central HS), it was his second tally of the contest and third of the season.  The three goals ties him with freshman Zach Gyuricza (Chicago, IL/St. Viator HS) for the team lead.

Webster took a 1-0 lead at 22:25 in the first half on a goal by Jeremy Statman (FR, Austin, TX/McCullum HS).  Statman took a cross from Drew Quisenberry (FR, Morton, IL/Morton HS) to set up the score.  Eureka answered that goal with one of its own, 10 minutes later, to tie it at 1-1.

Pierce took a cross from Statman, at 41:24, to score his first goal and give the Gorloks the lead heading into the half.  Early in the second half, a miscommunication between the Webster defense and goalie Alex Bergmann (FR, Wentzville, MO/St. Dominic HS) left the ball on the foot of a Red Devil forward who punched it in to tie the game at 2-2.

The tandem of Pierce and Statman would save the day when Statman dribbled the ball down the left sideline, then crossed it to Pierce in front of the goal, who hammered it in for the game-winner at 87:57.

The Gorloks dominated statistically, outshooting the Red Devils, 28-9, and having the edge in corners, 11-5.

Bergmann picked up his first collegiate win in goal and evened his season record at 1-1.

Webster is 1-0-1 in the SLIAC and 2-7-2 overall.  The Gorloks have a pair of SLIAC contests this week.  They travel to Clayton, MO, on October 7 to face Fontbonne University and on October 10, head to Carlinville, IL, to take on Blackburn College.
