Gorloks Bring Down Golden Eagles, 3-0

Box Score The Webster University vollleyball team raced to a first set win, then fought for the next two to gain a 3-0 sweep over Spalding University (KY) on October 6 at Grant Gymnasium.  The Gorloks continued to dominate at the net as they won their third straight sweep in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and fifth in six contests.

The Gorloks won the first set, 25-15, after jumping to a 6-0 lead.  The Golden Eagles fought the good fight over the next two sets.  Spalding had Webster down, 13-17, and 20-22 in the second.  But after a Webster timeout, the Gorloks responded by outscoring the Golden Eagles 5-1 for a 25-23 win.  In set three, Spalding once again had Webster in a hole, at 17-20, before a Gorlok timeout righted the ship and Webster outscored Spalding, 8-2, down the stretch for a 25-22 win.

Freshman Samantha Budrovich (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South HS) had 10 kills, with only one error, for a .600 attack percentage for the match.  Senior Rachel Nelson (Papillion, NE/LaVista South HS) had eight kills and no errors as she hit .500 on the evening.  Budrovich and Nelson, along with Emily Knowles (JR, Belleville, IL/Mascoutah HS) and Jory Siebenmorger (JR, Eureka, MO/Eureka HS) have formed a 'fearsome foursome' up front for Webster.

Siebenmorgen had eight kills and two block assists, while Knowles had a block solo and two block assists.  As a team, Webster had two solo blocks and 12 block assists, to Spalding's one solo block, and a .292 attack percent for the match.  Knowles had 12 kills with no errors and four block assists in the Gorloks' last match, a 3-0 win over Fontbonne, with Nelson having 11 kills and two block solos and two block assists.

Katie O'Toole (JR, St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South HS) had a team-high 14 digs and is at 997 for her career.  With three more digs she will become just the 12th player in Webster history to reach that mark.  Freshman Jilli Zimpfer (St. Charles, MO/St. Charles HS) led the Gorloks with 18 assists.

Head coach Merry Graf is also closing in on a milestone.  The win was Graf's 298th at Webster, leaving her two shy of 300.

Webster now has a nine-match win streak vs. Spalding.  The Gorloks are 9-2 in the SLIAC and 11-9 overall.  The Golden Eagles fall to 8-5 in the SLIAC.  Webster hosts Fonbonne University on October 8 at Grant Gym.  That is 'Dig Pink' night and various fund-raising activities will be held to help raise awareness of, and to fight, breast cancer.
