Gorloks Sweep MacMurray, Improve To 3-0 In SLIAC

Box Score The Webster University volleyball team is off to a 3-0 start in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, defeating MacMurray College, 3-0, at Grant Gymnasium on September 22.  The Gorloks jumped to a 7-0 lead in the first set and never looked back as they won their third straight SLIAC contest.

Webster, on a quest to win its fifth consecutive SLIAC championship, wound up winning that first set, 25-13.  Samantha Budrovich (FR, St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South HS), Rachel Nelson (SR, Papillion, NE/Papillion LaVista-South HS), and Jory Siebenmorgen (JR, Eureka, MO/Eureka HS), all had three kills in the set, with Budrovich hitting at a .750 attack pct.  Katie O'Toole (JR, St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South HS) led with four digs and Emmi Murphy (FR, Springfield, MO/Central HS) led with seven assists.

The Gorloks had a much tougher go in the second set.  The Highlanders had a 16-15 lead, after the teams went back and forth throughout the set, until the Gorloks went on a 9-0 run to take a 24-16 edge.  MacMurray stuck around with two more points to make it, 24-18, but Webster prevailed at 25-18.  Emi Beining (SO, Festus, MO/Lutheran South HS), Emma Cabutti (Mahomet, IL/Mahomet-Seymour HS), and Emily Knowles (JR, Belleville, IL/Mascoutah HS) each had three kills in the set.  Budrovich led with six digs and Jill Zimpfer (FR, St. Charles, MO/St. Charles HS) had five assists.

After a slow start in the third set, the Gorloks ran away, winning 25-13.  Siebenmorgen led with five kills, O'Toole was high with six digs, and Murphy was tops with eight assists.  For the match, Siebenmorgen had 10 kills and a .333 attack percent, O'Toole 15 digs, and Murphy 18 assists.

Webster head coach Merry Graf was able to utilize 12 players in the contest.  A JV match with the Highlanders followed immediately after the varsity tilt.

It was 'Fuzzy's Tacos' night at the game, with a representative from Fuzzy's handing out free taco cards and Fuzzy's 'huggies' to fans.  It was also Hawaiian night at the game and the best dressed in Hawaiian garb was awarded a Fuzzy's $25 gift certificate.  In a close contest, Aaron Meyer out-applauded Jeff Barlow to take home the prize.

Webster is 5-6 overall on the season and will travel to Jacksonville, IL, on September 26 to take on host Illinois College.  Webster will also play a SLIAC match vs. Iowa Wesleyan University.  The Gorloks are back home on September 29 in another SLIAC match-up, vs. Principia College.
