Box Score 2 The Webster University volleyball team rebounded from a slug it out tie-breaker loss in its opener, to a sweep over a conference opponent in the nightcap of a tri-match at Illinois College, in Jacksonville, IL, on September 25. Webster fell, 3-2, in a tie-breaker to host Illinois, then rolled over Iowa Wesleyan University, 3-0, in a neutral site St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match.
In its 3-0 win over Wesleyan, the Gorloks had an easy first set win, 25-12, a closer 25-20 win in the second, and a more comfortable, 25-14 win in the third. Webster had opened up an 18-6 lead in the final set. The win keeps the Gorloks undefeated in SLIAC play at 4-0.
Jory Siebenmorgen (JR, Eureka, MO/Eureka HS) led Webster with 13 kills. Maria Soffner (SO, Creve Coeur, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) had a team-high 19 digs and Emmi Murphy (FR, Springfield, MO/Central HS) had 18 assists to lead the Gorloks. Thirteen players saw action for Webster in the match.
Against host Illinois College, Webster won a close opener, 25-23. The Lady Blues evened the match with a 25-14 win in the second set and were poised for a win, taking another hard-fought set in the third, 27-25. But the Gorloks, down 21-16, came from behind for a thrilling 28-26 win in the fourth set to send the match to a tie-breaker. Illinois College jumped out to an 8-4 lead before winning the tie-breaker, 15-9, and the match.
Siebenmorgen and Rachel Nelson (SR, Papillion, NE/Papillion LaVista-South HS) each had 18 kills in the match, with Siebenmorgen recording a .317 attack percent. Nelson had two solo blocks and four block assists for six total in the match. Murphy had a season-high 28 assists and a season-high 21 digs as well.
Illinois College, a member of the Midwest Conference, improved to 5-7.
The Gorloks continue the road trip with a two matches on September 26 at Carlinville, IL. Webster will play host Blackburn College and Greenville College (IL) in a pair of SLIAC contests. Webster is back home on September 29 vs. Principia College (IL).
