Box Score Opening the defense of its St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship, the Webster University women's soccer team beat Principia College (IL), 5-1, at the Soccer Park on September 26. It was the Gorloks' 20th straight regular season win in the SLIAC, not having lost since 2012.
Sydney Tedesco (SO, Belleville, IL/Belleville East HS) gave Webster a 1-0 lead at the 15:00 mark in the first half. Ashley Mess (SR, St. Louis, MO/Northwest HS) took a free kick that deflected to Tedesco, who took a shot that was initially saved by the Panther goalie but Tedesco was able to score on the rebound. It was her second goal of the year.
With 12 minutes left in the half, a Panther forward got off a shot from 20 yards out, just lofting it over the outstretched arms of goalie Alisa Coralic (FR, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville HS) and under the crossbar to tie the game at 1-1.
Freshman Jen Laaksonen (St. Louis, MO/Fox HS) scored her first collegiate goal, at 40:40, to give Webster a 2-1 lead heading into the half. Laaksonen corraled a loose ball off the Panther goal keeper and lifted it up over a Principia defender who actually tipped the shot with her hand as it landed in the net. Two minutes later, Chelsea Noser (FR, Collinsville, IL/Collinsville HS) fired in a shot from 15 yards out for her fourth goal of the season and a 3-1 Webster halftime lead. Carolyn Ries (FR, St. Louis, MO/Lingbergh HS) had the assist.
Webster outshot Principia, 15-2 for the half, with the Panther goalkeeper coming up with six saves. For the game, the Gorloks outshot the Panthers, 28-4.
Brianna Pagan (SO, St. Louis, MO/Washington HS) made it 4-1 Webster, seven minutes into the second half, off a pass from Jodi Kaiping (JR, Waterloo, IL/Waterloo HS). It was Pagan's second goal of the season. She had eight goals for the Gorloks in 2014. Lauren Pratt (SR, St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) ended the Gorloks' scoring with her first goal of the season, off a pass from Kayla Dye (SO, St. Louis, MO/Windsor HS) at 84:21.
Coralic picked up the win in goal and is 4-0 on the season. Webster starts at 1-0 in the SLIAC and improves to 5-3 overall. Principia is 0-1 in the SLIAC and 2-6 overall.
On September 29, the Gorloks will travel down Big Bend Boulevard to take on the nationally ranked Washington University Bears. Washington U. is 6-1 and ranked #7 in the latest NSCAA rankings. Webster will be home on October 3 to resume play in the SLIAC, hosting Eureka College (IL) at the Soccer Park.
