Volleyball Drops a Pair in Washington U Tournament Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Webster University volleyball team lost its first two matches at the Washington University Tournament, falling to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (IN), 3-0, on September 4.  The Gorloks fell to a tough Oshkosh squad in the opener and played better vs. the Fightin' Engineers in the nightcap, but couldn't break through.

The Gorloks fell in three straight sets to the Oshkosh Titans, 16-25, 19-25, and 9-25.  Webster was overpowered at the net as Oshkosh had an attack percentage of .208 to the Gorloks' .027.  The Titans held the edge in block assists, 10-2.  Rachel Nelson (SR, Papillion, NE/Papillion LaVista-South HS) had nine kills and only one error, and had a .381 attack percent.  Junior Katie O'Toole (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South HS) led Webster with 12 digs.  The Titans were a strong challenge for the Gorloks, having finished 31-8 in 2014 while advancing to the NCAA Tournament. 

Against Rose-Hulman, who had defeated Webster three days earlier at Grant Gymnasium, 3-1, the Gorloks lost 19-25, 18-25, and 18-25.  Transfer Emily Knowles (JR, Belleville, IL/Illinois Wesleyan University) had eight kills to lead Webster  Transfer Jory Siebenmorgen (Eureka, MO/University of MO-St. Louis) chipped in with seven kills and Nelson added six.  Maria Sofner (SO, Creve Coeur, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) had 14 digs and freshman Jilli Zimpfer (St. Charles, MO/St. Charles HS)  had 17 assists to lead the Gorloks in those categories.  Zimpfer also led Webster with seven assists vs. Oshkosh. 

Webster is 1-3 on the young season, and will finish the tournament with a match vs. North Central College (IL) on September 5.  The Cardinals are off to a 4-0 start to the 2015 season, after going 2-0 on day one of the Wash U tourney.
