Box Score Running into a third straight tough opponent at the Washington University Tournament, the Webster University volleyball team lost to North Central College (IL), 3-1, on September 5 in Clayton, MO. The Gorloks lost a cliffhanger in the first set, came back to win the second, but eventually succumbed to the undefeated Cardinals.
Webster was nipped in the opener, 25-27, then won the second set, 25-20, to tie the match. North Central had an easier time in the the third set, winning 25-14. The Gorloks battled in set four before losing, 20-25, to clinch the match for the Cardinals.
Freshman Samantha Budrovich (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South HS) was the latest of the 2015 recruiting class to step forward on the young season, leading with 14 kills and a .303 attack percentage. In addition, the six-footer had 11 digs in the match as well. Maria Sofner (SO, St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) had 22 digs to lead the Gorloks, and Jilli Zimpfer (FR, St. Charles, MO/St. Charles HS) once again led the team in assists, with 22.
North Central is 5-0, and finished 3-0 in the tournament. Webster is now 1-4 on the season. The Gorloks have their Blue vs. Gold Intrasquad Scrimmage at Grant Gymnasium on September 9 before travelling to Greenville, IL, on September 12 to start play in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Webster takes on Eureka College and Iowa Wesleyan University at the neutral site.
