The Webster University men's soccer team fell to Spalding University, 1-0, in OT on October 25 at the Soccer Park. Spalding entered the contest at 7-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the Gorloks took the Golden Eagles to the wire in the loss. Freshman goalie Kyle Hertel had shutout Spalding for almost 98 minutes before the Golden Eagles got the game winner.
Spalding remains undefeated at 8-0 in the SLIAC as Webster hangs onto fourth place at 4-3.
After 90 minutes of scoreless play, Spalding ended the contest when a corner kick deflected to a Golden Eagle forward, who's shot deflected off a player past Hertel (Sandpoint, ID/Sandpoint) at 97:58. Webster and Spalding played to a 0-0 first half. Spalding had the upper hand offensively in the scoreless frame, outshooting the Gorloks, 7-1, with Hertel making three saves in the half. The Gorloks came alive in the second half. After being outshot, 7-1, in the first, Webster and Spalding each had seven shots in the second half.
Less than one minute into the second half, Brendan Shields (SR, St. Peters, MO/Ft. Zumwalt East) ripped a shot from just inside the Spalding box that the Golden Eagle goalie made a diving save on. The Gorloks' next best chance came when they had a free kick just outside the Golden Eagle box at 79:45. Dino Music's (JR, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville) shot went wide right. Music had another free kick, this time well outside the box, at 85:41, and lofted a shot right again. This time in hopes of a Webster forward getting a head on it, but the shot was wide.
In the overtime session, play went back and forth, with the Spalding goal coming on the first shot of the overtime period.
Webster is 4-3 in the SLIAC and 6-9 overall. Spalding is 8-0 in the SLIAC and 10-6 overall. The Gorloks host Blackburn College (IL) on October 27 at the Soccer Park.
