The Webster University men's soccer defeated MacMurray College, 3-1, on October 8 at the Soccer Park. The Gorloks had a dominating effort as they beat the Highlanders, improving to 3-1 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
The Gorloks broke a scoreless game with a goal off a penalty kick at 34:00. Drew Quisenberry (SO, Morton, IL/Morton) was pulled down in the box and nailed the kick for his first goal of the season. With just 12 seconds left in the half, Frank Verdu (SR, Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) scored on a scramble in the MacMurray goalie box to make it 2-0 at the half. Quisenberry picked up an assist on the play. It was Verdu's first goal of the season.
Webster entered the locker room with 12-0 edge in shots, including five on goal. The Gorloks also had nine corner kicks to none for the Highlanders as Webster dominated play.
Despite its continued dominance in the second half, the Gorloks found themselves only up by a goal after the Highlanders scored at the 57:00. Webster's Angel Jasso (SR, Kileen, TX/Shoemaker) took the pressure off with a goal at 69:30, off a pass from Dino Music (JR, St. Louis, MO/Mehlville). It was Jasso's second goal of the year.
Eli Smith (FR, Orlando, FL/Dr. Phillips) had a scoreless half in goal in the first half. Alex Bergmann (SO, Wentzville, MO/St. Dominic) took over the nets in the second half, but was relieved by Zach Horn (SR, Godfrey, IL/Alton a Marquette) after Jasso's insurance goal. Smith picked up the win and is 2-2 on the season.
Webster is 3-1 in the SLIAC and 5-7 overall. MacMurray falls to 0-3-1 and 2-8-1 overall. The Gorloks have a week off before travelling to Elsah, IL, on October 15 to take on Principia College.
