Late Goals Not Enough As Gorloks Lose, 4-3, At Spalding

The Webster Univrersity men's soccer team lost in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament semi-finals, 4-2, to Spalding University, on November 3 in Louisville, KY.  The host Golden Eagles, the #1 seed in the tournament, got out to a 3-0 lead in the first 20 minutes of the contest, and despite a late scare by the Gorloks, held on for the win.

In a game that differed drastically from a match up of the two teams nine days earlier, Spalding took offensive charge in the first half building the 3-0 lead as the Webster offense countered with a lone tally to make it a 3-1 halftime score.  The Golden Eagles scored an additional insurance goal at 58:52 in the second half that would turn out to be the game-winner.  The Gorloks lost to Spalding on October 25 at the Soccer Park, 1-0, in overtime, giving hope they could pull off the upset and advance to the championship.

Drew Quisenberry (SO, Morton, IL/Morton), who had scored Webster's first half goal, added a second goal at 84:20 to cut the lead to 4-2.  Brendan Shields (SR, St. Peters, MO/Ft. Zumwalt East) netted his fourth goal at 85:30 to cut the deficit to one, 4-3, with Quisenberry assisting.  But that would be the final goal for the Gorloks.

For Quisenberry, it was the fifth straight goal he scored for Webster over its last two games, scoring the final three goals in a 4-1 win at Eureka their previous contest.  The two goals vs. Spalding gave him a team-leading six goals on the season.

Both teams played a man short in the second half as Webster's Jake Stowers (SR, St. Louis, MO/Duchesne) and a Spalding playing each were issued red cards with just 43 seconds left in the first.  The game definitely was a testy one as six yellow cards and two red cards were handed out.

Webster outshot Spalding, 8-5 in the second half, with five shots on goal, after the Golden Eagles had a 7-3 edge in the first.

Kyle Hertel (FR, Sandpoint, ID/Sandpoint) who manned the nets in the 1-0 overtime game, got the start in the semi-final.  He faced eight shots on goal as he took the loss.  Hertel finished his freshman campaign at 4-6.

Quisenberry and Zach Horn (SR, Godfrey, IL/Marquette Catholic) were named to the 2016 SLIAC All-Tournament Team.

Webster was 6-3 in the SLIAC and finished 8-10 overall on the season.  Spalding, which finished 9-0 in the SLIAC, improves to 12-6 overall.  The Gorloks will have a different look in 2017 as nine seniors played their last game for Webster in the contest.
