Women's Soccer Wins Its 12th SLIAC Championship

2-1 Win Over Fontbonne Sends Gorloks To NCAA III Championships

The Webster University women's soccer team had a goal to start 2016, a 12th St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship.  The Gorloks' goal was realized with a 2-1 win over Fontbonne University in the SLIAC Tournament championship game, on November 4 at the Soccer Park.  The Gorloks will now make their 12th trip to the NCAA Championships in the 17 years of the program's existence.

The win for Webster was its ninth SLIAC Tournament championship, and 12th SLIAC Championship overall.  There was no SLIAC Tournament from 2000-2003, and the Gorloks won the league title/championship all four of those seasons.  Webster, who won its fourth straight SLIAC regular season title this season, has won 12 overall, tying Principia College for the most in SLIAC women's soccer history.

Kayla Dye (JR, St. Louis, MO/Windsor) scored the game-winner at 60:52 when a cross from Sydney Tedesco (JR, Belleville, IL/Belleville East) was flicked by Alli Ferguson (SR, Highland, IL/Highland) to Dye.  Dyle nailed the shot for her sixth goal of the year.

The Gorloks were initially stunned when, 2:38 into the contest, a defensive lapse allowed the Griffins an open shot just outside the goal box for a score, and a 1-0 Fontbonne lead.  That would turn out to be Fontbonne's only shot of the half.

After play went back and forth over the next 40 minutes, Webster would tie the game with just 1:27 left in the half.  Nicole Bascio (SO, St. Louis, MO/Timberland) had a shot deflect off Griffins goalie Taylor Pulvirenti hand's right to Brianna Pagan (JR, St. Louis, MO/Washington), who rammed it home for her fifth goal of the year at 43:33.

The teams were tied at the half, 1-1.  The Fontbonne goal turned out to be its only shot of the half as Webster had the edge in shots, 9-1, with the Griffin's having four saves.  Webster wound up with a 15-3 advantage in shots.

Alisa Coralic (SO, St. Louis MO/Mehlville) started in goal in the second half for Webster and picked up the win.  She made two saves in the half after taking over for Aly Miller (FR, Middleville, MI/Thornapple) who started the game in goal for Webster.  Coralic is 4-2 on the season

Pagan was named the 2016 SLIAC Tournament 'Most Valuable Player' for her efforts.  A trio of freshmen from Webster were also named to the All-Tournament Team, Lilly Brauer (Belleville, IL/Belleville East), Melissa Kasper (Chicago, IL/Oswego), and Olivia Osterhage (FR, St. Louis, MO/Eureka).

Webster, ranked 9th in the latest NSCAA Central Region poll, is now 13-7 overall with a six-game win streak.  Fontbonne ends the season at 12-7-2.  Webster holds the series lead over Fontbonne, 21-3, with a seven-game win streak dating to 2012.  The Gorloks now await their destination and opponent in the 2016 NCAA III Championships.  That announcement will be made on Monday, November 7, at 12:30 p.m.  The field selection can be seen live HERE.
