The Webster University baseball team bounced back from a pair of losses the previous day to down North Park University, 5-1, on February 28, at GCS Ballpark. Austin Beccue gave the Gorloks some much needed innings in a starting role in the victory.
Beccue (SO, Red Bud, IL/Gibault Catholic HS) made his collegiate debut, starting for the Gorloks and going 5 2/3 innings, giving up five hits, one run, and striking out five. Beccue picked up the win. After giving up a run in the first inning, Beccue settled down and shut the Vikings down before giving way to Zack Pawlowski (SR, Mundelein, IL/Mundelein HS) in the sixth.
Webster scored single runs in the first and third, added two in the fifth, and another single run in the sixth to build up a 5-1 lead. In the two-run fifth, Jeff Kammer (SR, Chesterfield, MO/Lafayette HS) opened the inning with a bunt hit. After a single by Jake Milosch (FR, St. Charles, IL/St. Charles East HS), Kammer was thrown out at the plate on a failed sacrifice attempt. But singles by Adam Naliwajko (SO, Mt. Prospect, IL/St. Viator HS) and Matt Wollnik (JR, Naperville, IL/Nequa Valley HS) plated two runs.
Mitch Stefani (SR, Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley HS) took over on the mound in the eighth inning, relieving Pawlowki, and throwing two scoreless innings to close out the contest.
Kyle Uhrich (JR, St. Louis, MO/Webster Groves HS) was 1-4, with two RBIs, a walk, and a run scored. Naliwajko was 1-3 with two RBIs and a run scored, and Wollnik wound up 2-4, reaching on an error as well. Brandon Smith (JR, Imperial, MO/Seckman HS) had two hits as well, going 2-3, and reaching on an error and HBP.
Webster, ranked 5th in the ABCA/Collegiate Baseball poll, evened its season record at 3-3. North Park Vikings fell to 1-1. The Gorloks wind up their four-game weekend home stint with a game vs. the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh on February 29.
