The Webster University softball team had two good starts and rolled a pair of '8's as the Gorloks defeated the St. Louis College of Pharmacy, 8-3 and 8-0, on April 13 at Blackburn Park. Alexis Spriggs and Chelsea Thornley each picked up their third wins of the year on the mound, with Spriggs throwing a complete game.
Webster jumped on top in
game one in the first. Kate Sullens (JR, Highland, IL/Highland HS) and Carol Ann Weiler (SO, St. Peter's, MO/Ft. Zumwalt East HS) walked. The duo pulled off a double steal with Sullens taking home as Weiler took second. A Sidney Coleman (Fredericksburg, VA/Fountain-Ft. Carson HS) double scored Weiler to make it 2-0.
The Gorloks added two more in the third as Sullens, Katelyn Johnson (JR, Cambridge, IL/Woodstock HS), and Weiler walked the bases loaded to open the inning. Coleman had a sac fly to to right, scoring Sullens, and Erin McGinnis (SR, Fenton, MO/Rockwood Summit HS) doubled Johnson home for a 4-0 lead. A dropped fly ball by the Gorloks led to two Eutectic unearned runs in the fourth but Webster got them back in the bottom half of the inning.
Kaylyn DeCock (SR, Bettendorf, IA/Bettendorf HS) singled and Karissa Cardenas (JR, Henderson, CO/Prairie View HS) reached on an error. As Cardenas swiped second, an errant throw by the Pharmacy catcher to third allowed DeCock to come home. Cardenas took third on the play and scored on a groundout by Johnson to make it 6-2. The Eutectics picked up another unearned run in the fifth on a Webster throw to third to cut the lead to 6-3.
A walk to Coleman and single by Tessa Johanning (SO, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan HS), followed by an error on the left fielder, sent Coleman home to make it 7-3 in the bottom of the fifth. Webster would add one more insurance run in the sixth on a single by Coleman to score Johnson, who had led off with a walk, for the 8-3 final.
Spriggs (JR, Scott City, MO/Scott City HS) threw a complete game, allowing seven hits and three runs, all unearned. She struck out three as she won her third game of the year.
Coleman was 2-2 with three RBIs, a double and a walk. Johnson was 0-2 but with two walks, two runs, and an RBI. Sullens was 0-2 as well, but with two runs, two walks, and a stolen base. Weiler wound up 1-2 with two walks, a stolen base and a run.
Webster jumped on top again in
game two, this time 4-0 in the first. Sullens singled and Johnson walked. A two out single by McGinnis would score both, and Kayla Day (JR, Caruthers, CA/Caruthers HS) followed with a two-run single that scored Johanning and McGinnis who came all the way around from first.
In the Gorloks' second, after a walk to Sullens and back to back bloop singles by Johnson and Weiler, a Johanning fielder's choice scored Johnson to make it 5-0. In the third inning, Sydney Bierman FR, Knob Noster, MO/Knob Noster HS) singled and Sullens doubled, with Johnson sending pinch-runner Cardenas home on a sac fly for a 6-0 lead.
Coleman singled and Johanning doubled her home in the fourth to make it 7-0. Johanning would score on a single by Chyanne Fulmer (FR, DeSoto, IL/Carbondale HS) to give Webster an 8-0 lead. Webster won in five innings on the eight-run rule.
Thornley (JR, Clinton, MO/Clinton HS) started and threw four scoreless innings to pick up her third win of the year. She scattered four hits and walked none. Kelsey Donohue (SO, Hazelwood, MO/Hazelwood West HS) made her Gorlok pitching debut in the fifth, and despite allowing three hits, came out of the inning unscathed.
Johanning was 1-2 with two RBIs, a double, walk, and two runs scored. Johnson was 1-1 with an RBI, walk, and two runs scored, and Day was 2-3 with two RBIs. Fulmer was 2-3 with an RBI, and McGinnis 1-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Webster is 9-15 on the season with the wins. The Gorloks host a pair of SLIAC doubleheaders this weekend. Principia College will be at Blackburn Park on Saturday, April 16, for Senior Day. Spalding University (KY) visits the following day on April 17. That will conclude Webster's home portion of its schedule with its final 10 regular season games on the road.
