Gorloks Beat Griffins, 11-3, In Series Opener

The Webster University baseball team improved to 10-4 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 11-3 win over Fontbonne University, on April 16, at GCS Ballpark.  Jack Bensinger picked up his sixth win on the mound and Kyle Uhrich went deep twice in the contest.

Bensinger (GR, Los Angeles, CA/Campbell Hall) went seven innings, limiting the Griffins to seven hits and two runs, while striking out six.  He improved to 6-2 on the season and has a 1.82 earned run average.  Uhrich (JR, St. Louis, MO/Webster Groves HS), the NCAA III leader in home runs in 2015, went yard twice, including a massive solo shot in the third inning, and a two-run blast in the eighth.  Uhrich now has five home runs on the season.

Webster got off to a 2-0 lead in the first.  Mike Wick (SO, Bartlett, IL/Bartlett HS) singled and stole second.  Mike Golich (SO, Aurora, IL/West Aurora HS) walked and with two out, Jeff Kammer (SR, Chesterfield, MO/Lafayette HS) doubled them both home.

After Fontbonne scored a run in the top of the third, Uhrich got it back with a swing of the bat in the bottom half, landing a ball on the roof of the office building beyond the left field wall.  That gave Webster a 3-1 lead.  Fontbonne cut the lead to 3-2 with another single run in the fourth, but Webster answered with three of its own in the bottom half.

Adam Naliwajko (SO, Mt. Prospect, IL/St. Viator HS) doubled and took third on a passed ball.  Matt Wollnik (JR, Naperville, IL/Nequa Valley HS) hit as sac fly to score him.  Wick walked and took second on a passed ball and came home on a Golich single.  After Golich was caught stealing, Uhrich doubled and scored on a single by Blake Thomas (JR, Troy, IL/Triad HS), to make it 6-2.

Jake Milosch (FR, St. Charles, IL/St. Charles East HS) got in on the long ball contest with a solo home run to left in the fifth to make it, 7-2.  Bensinger gave way to Brett Jungles (JR, Naperville, IL/St. Francis HS) in the eighth and Fontbonne nicked Jungles for a run to make it, 7-3.  The Gorloks got plenty of insurance help in the eighth.

Wollnik had doubled and Golich singled him home before Uhrich hit his second round-tripper, deep over the wall in left center, to make it 10-2.  A Jacob Budrovich (FR, St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South HS) pinch-hit single scored Thomas in the eighth for Webster's final run as the Gorloks led, 11-3.  .

Joe Elfrink (JR, Leopold, MO/Leopold HS) threw a scoreless ninth for Webster to close it out.

Uhrich was 3-5 with the two homers, a double, three RBIs, and three runs scored.  Thomas was 4-5 with an RBI and run scored, and Golich was 2-4 with two RBIs, two runs, and a walk.  Kammer was 2-5 with two RBIs, two doubles, and a stolen base, and Milosch was 1-3 with the home run.  Naliwajko was 2-4 with two doubles and a walk.

Webster piled up 17 hits, including nine extra base hits with six doubles and three home runs.

The Gorloks are 10-4 in the SLIAC and 17-12 overall.  Webster completes the three-game series with Fontbonne with a doubleheader at Clayton, MO, on April 17.
