Gorloks Lose Two To Ranked Bears

The Webster University softball team lost a doubleheader at Washington University, 3-1 and 9-0, on April 28 in Clayton, MO.  The Gorloks were able to hang with the Bears, #24 ranked nationally in the NCAA III, in game one, but lost in five innings in the nightcap.

Washington U scored single runs in the first and second innings in game one off Webster starter Alexis Spriggs (JR, Scott City, MO/Scott City HS), before the Gorloks broke through with a run in the third.  Kayla Day (JR, Caruthers, CA/Caruthers HS) singled to lead off and Sydney Bierman (FR, Knob Noster, MO/Know Noster HS) pinch-ran.  Kaylyn DeCock (SR, Bettendorf, IA/Bettendorf HS) bunted Bierman to third and with two down, Kate Sullens (JR, Highland, IL/Highland HS) singled Bierman home to make it 2-1.

Chelsea Thornley (SO, Clinton, MO/Clinton HS) took over for Spriggs in the fourth.  She gave up a pair of singles to the Bears to lead off the inning, and with two down the Bears scored on another single to give them a 3-1 lead.  After Thornley threw a scoreless fifth, Paige Prather (SR, Evansville, IN/Evansville Central HS) took over on the mound in the sixth.  Prather gave up a hit and no runs to keep the deficit at two runs.

The Gorloks couldn't muster any offense in the seventh and the Bears won the opener, 3-1.  Spriggs went three innings and took the loss, giving up seven hits and two runs. Thornley went two innings and gave up three hits and a run, and Prather gave up just the one hit in her lone inning.   Offensively, Sullens was 2-3 with Webster's lone RBI.

Game two was not as close an affair.  The Bears scored two runs off Webster starter Tessa Johanning (SO, Sullivan, MO/Sullivan HS) in the first, then added five more runs in the third to build a 7-0 lead..  After Washington U opened the fourth with a single and home run to make it 9-0, Prather was summoned from the bullpen.  Prather set down the first two batters, and after a Gorlok error, set down the side.

The Gorloks got a single from Johanning in the fifth, but couldn't get on the scoreboard as the Bears won in five innings.  Katelyn Johnson (JR, Cambridge, IL/Woodstock HS) had Webster's only other hit, a double.  Johanning took the loss for the Gorloks, falling to 3-6.

Webster is 16-19 overall on the season.  Washington University improves to 34-10 with the wins.

The Gorloks will wind up regular season play and their SLIAC schedule with a doubleheader at Eureka College (IL).  Webster is currently fifth in the SLIAC standings, one game behind Westminster and Greenville Colleges, who each had two games left starting the days' competition.
