Bensinger Shutout Give Gorloks Split vs Westminster

The Webster University baseball team got a shutout from Jack Bensinger in the opener, but settled for a split with Westminster College on April 9 at GCS Ballpark.  The Gorloks won the seven-inning first game, 1-0, but their bats were silent in a 6-0 loss to the Blue Jays in game two.

Bensinger (GR, Los Angeles, CA/Campbell Hall) three a seven-inning shutout in the opener.  He stranded hits in the first and second innings, then allowed only one other runner, on an error, the rest of the way.  Bensinger walked none while striking out three, and retired the final 11 batters in succession.  He improves to 5-2 on the season and lowered his earned run average to 1.73 with the shutout.

Webster scored its only run in the first when Mike Wick (SO, Bartlett, IL/Bartlett HS) led off with a walk, advanced to third on a single by Brandon Smith (JR, Mperial, MO/Seckman HS) and scored on a double-play grounder off the bat of Kyle Uhrich (JR, St. Louis, MO/Webster Groves HS).  The Gorloks had only three hits themselves for a total of five in the one hour and 10 minute contest.

In game two, Matt Goro (JR, Wildwood, MO/Lafayette HS) started for Webster and went four scoreless innings, giving up five hits.  Trey Tigart (JR, Sikeston, MO/Sikeston HS) relieved in the fifth.  The Blue Jays reached Tigart for a run in the sixth when he allowed a double and a single, with a groundout scoring the lone tally.

Tigart was tagged for a solo home run to lead off the eighth, and a walk and two singles added another run.  After walking in a run to make it a 4-0 deficit, Johnny Lord (JR, Naperville, IL/Nequa Valley HS) was summoned from the pen.  Lord was touched for a two-run single before getting the final out in the inning, as Webster trailed, 6-0.  Tigart fell to 2-6 on the season with the loss.

The Gorlok offense was held at bay for a second straight game, picking up just two hits in the nine innings, and giving them just five total on the afternoon.

Webster is now 8-4 in the SLIAC, 6-2 in the West Division, and 14-12 overall.   Westminster is 6-3 in the SLIAC, 3-2 in the West Division, and 15-9 overall.  The first two teams in each division advance to SLIAC postseason tournament.

The Gorloks complete the weekend series by travelling to Fulton, MO, for a single game with Westminster on April 10.  Webster will host Washington University on April 12 for a single game at GCS Ballpark.
