Gorloks Engineer Win At Rose-Hulman, 7-6

The Webster University baseball team won its final regular season contest, with a 7-6 win in 10 innings over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, on May 8 in Terre Haute, IN.  A Matt Wollnik singled plated the winning run in the 10th as Mitch Stefani shut the Engineers down in their half of the inning for his fourth save of the season.

The Gorloks opened up a 5-0 lead in the first two innings.  Mike Wick (SO, Bartlett, IL/Bartlett HS) led off the first with a single and Brandon Smith (JR, Imperial, MO/Seckman HS) walked.  Kyle Uhrich (JR, St. Louis, MO/Webster Groves HS) singled into left scoring Wick, and a throwng error by the left fielder allowed Smith to score and Uhrich to take third.  A Blake Thomas (SR, Triad, IL/Troy HS) ground out scored Uhrich for a 3-0 lead.

In the second, Mike Golich (SO, Aurora, IL/West Aurorar HS) singled with one out and Wick walked.  Golich and Wick worked a double steal of third and second.  Smith reached on an error on the shortstop with Golich scoring and Wick taking third.  With two down, Smith swiped second as Wick stole home on the throw to second, making it 5-0.

Trey Tigart (JR, Sikeston, MO/Sikeston HS) started for Webster and had thrown three scoreless innings before giving up a pair of singles to the Fightin' Engineers to lead off the fourth.  After Tigart struck out the next batter looking, Johnny Lord (JR, Naperville, IL/Nequa Valley HS) was summoned from the pen and coaxed a double play grounder to end the threat.

Rose-Hulman picked up a single run in the fifth off Lord, and scored two unearned runs in the sixth to cut the Webster lead to 5-3.  Jeff Kammer (SR, Chesterfield, MO/Lafayette HS) led off the eighth with his ninth homer to add an insurance run for the Gorloks.  It was Kammer's 26th career home run, putting him just one behind Andrew Fuiten, who is at #2 on the all-time list with 27.

Lord got into a jam in the eighth, giving up a pair of singles to lead off the inning.  After a flyout scored one, Matt Goro (JR, Wildwood, MO/Lafayette HS) was called on to relieve Lord.  After a Gorlok error put a second runner on, a double scored the Fightin' Engineers second run of the inning to make it a 6-5 Webster lead.  Goro struck out the first two batters in the ninth, but back to back doubles tied the game at 6-6.  Another Webster error put the winning run at third, but Goro got his third strikeout of the inning to send the game into extras.

Wollnik (JR, Naperville, IL/Nequa Valley HS) got his game winning hit in the 10th with two down, scoring Jake Milosch (FR, St. Charles, IL/St. Charles East HS), who had reached on an error and had advanced to third on another error on a fielder's choice.

Stefani (SR, Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley HS) gave up a one-out single in the 10th, but retired the next two batters for the save.  His four saves are the fifth highest single season total in Webster history, one behind Jason Gray's five in 2013 and 2014.  Tigart is second on the list with six in 2015.

Goro wound up picking up the win and is 2-0 on the season.  He went 1 2/3 innings, giving up three hits and a run, while striking out three.  Tigart went 3 1/3 innings, giving up five hits, a walk, no runs, and striking out four.  Lord went four innings, giving up five hits, two earned runs, and striking out two.

Kammer was 3-5 with a home run and RBI  After going the first 20 games of the season with a .257 average, Kammer has raised his average to .328 over the last 14 games.  Uhrich was 2-5 with an RBI and run scored.  He has 47 RBIs on the year, tops on the team and in the SLIAC.  Uhrich is tied for the home run lead in the SLIAC with 11.  Wick, sixth in the SLIAC with a .374 average, was 2-4 with two stolen bases and two runs scored.  Wollnik, Golich, and Thomas all had two hits in the game as well.

Webster is 27-13 overall on the season.  The Gorloks will face host Greenville College (IL) in the first round of the SLIAC Tournament on May 12.  Webster enters the tournament as the #1 seed.  Information on the SLIAC 2016 Baseball Tournament can be found HERE.
