The Webster University volleyball team took on a tough foe on the road, losing at Illinois Wesleyan University, 3-0, on September 15, in Bloomington, IL. The Gorloks came to life after a first set loss but were nipped in a tight second set loss, as the Titans, #17 ranked nationally in the NCAA III, went on to win in straight sets.
Webster took a 10-5 lead in the first set but Wesleyan went on a 10-0 run and scored 19 of the next 20 points to win the set, 25-12. Webster had eight attack errors in the run to aid Wesleyan. The Gorloks came to life in the second set, taking an 8-4 lead. The Titans came back to tie the match and the teams fought nip and tuck until Webster had a 23-20 lead and looked like it may tie the match. The Titans would come back to win a 27-25 cliffhanger though.
In set three, the Titans opened up an 8-3 lead. Webster came within two, 9-7, on a Torie Grassi (SO, St. Louis, MO/Rosati-Kain) kill, but Wesleyan pulled away, steadily building its lead for a 25-14 final and took the set and the match, 3-0.
Jory Siebenmorgen (SR, Eureka, MO/Eureka) had a team-high eight kills and a .250 attack percent. Grassi wound up with seven kills and chipped in with five digs. Kelsey Hamann (SO, Waterloo, IL/Waterloo) had 14 assists and Katie O'Toole (SR, St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South) had 13 digs.
Wesleyan is off to its best start since 2006 at 8-1. Webster saw its three-match win streak end and are 7-3 on the season.
The Gorloks travel to Jacksonville, IL, on September 17 for a pair of SLIAC matches vs. Greenville College (IL) and MacMurray College (IL). Webster returns home to Grant Gymnasium on September 20 as it takes on Eureka College.
