The Webster University volleyball team kept its grip on first place in the SLIAC, with a 3-1 win at MacMurray College, on October 19 in Jacksonville, IL. The Gorloks improved to 15-2 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, a half game up on Westminster College at 14-2.
The Gorloks have a showdown with Westminster in Fulton, MO, on November 1, when they conclude their regular season SLIAC schedule. The Blue Jays also have a match at Iowa Wesleyan University still to play.
Webster won the first two sets vs. MacMurray, 25-11 and 25-15, before dropping set three, 25-22. The Gorloks rebounded to take the fourth set, 25-22, and the match.
Samantha Kruse (FR, Waterloo, IL/Waterloo) had nine kills to lead Webster in that category, with Emi Beining (SR, Festus, MO/Lutheran South) getting eight. Kelsey Hamann (JR, Waterloo, IL/Waterloo) had a team-high 17 assists and Maria Soffner (SR, St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) and Kristen Farrah (FR, St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell) each with 17 digs. Kruse added 15 digs on her night. Rachel Mencel (SR, Colchester, IL/West Prairie) had two solo blocks and three block assists for Webster.
Webster has not lost to MacMurray in volleyball since 1996, with a 41-match winning streak against the Highlanders.
The Gorloks take an eight-day break before playing in the very competitive Emory University Tourney on October 27-28 in Atlanta, GA. Host Emory is ranked #4 nationally and Berry College (GA) is 20-3, while Washington & Lee University (VA) is 15-6.
