In a tournament where it had faced two tough teams already, the Webster University women's volleyball faced two more even tougher as it fell, 3-0, to Washington & Lee University (VA) and to host #8 ranked Emory University, on October 28 in Atlanta, GA. The matches were the final two games of the prestigious Emory National Invitational Tournament.
In it first match of the day Webster was overpowered by Washington & Lee, with its tall lineup, at the net as it lost, 25-16, 25-19, and 25-9. The Generals had 39 kills to the Gorloks' 17, and an attack pct. of .243 to Webster's -.019. The tall timbers the Generals put up front...their roster has 10 players 5'10' or taller...had 14 block assists to none for the Gorloks.
Emi Beining (SR, Festus, MO/Lutheran South) had five kills and a .364 attack pct. for the match. Ashley Robinson (SR, Bloomington, IL/Bloomington) and freshman Emma Larson (Bellevue, NE/Bellevue West) each had seven assists, while Maria Soffner (SR, St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) led with 18 digs.
Things didn't get any easier with the #8 ranked Eagles. Emory defeated Webster, 25-15, 25-17, and 25-15. In a repeat of the Washington & Lee match, Emory overpowered Webster with its attack. After two sets, the Eagles held a 34-14 edge in kills and a .413 to .103 attack pct.
The Gorloks had their best showing in the third set when a kill be Kristen Farrah (SO, St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell) made it 11-10 Emory. Another kill by Farrah had Webster down by three at 17-14. The Eagles went on an 8-2 run from there and won the set, 25-15, and the match.
Farrah led the team with six kills and also led with 15 digs for the match. Robinson had 12 assists to lead the team.
Webster is now 17-12 on the season. Emory improves to 25-5 and Washington & Lee improved to 21-8.
With the SLIAC title on the line, the Gorloks have a showdown on November 1, when they travel to Fulton, MO, to take on Westminster College. The Gorloks and Blue Jays will each enter the match with a 15-2 conference record and the winner will not only take the regular season title, but will have the SLIAC Tournament hosting honors as well. Westminster defeated Webster in a tie-breaker on October 14, playing at a neutral site in New Albany, IN, hosted by Spalding University.
