The Webster University men's soccer team was eliminated from the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament in a shoot out after a 0-0, double overtime tie with Principia College, on November 1 at the Soccer Park. The Panthers won the shoot out, 4-1, after two overtimes found the game still scoreless at 0-0.
After making its first shoot out attempt, the Gorloks missed their next three as the Panthers scored four straight to insure they would advance to the championship. Webster's excellent season comes to a close after going undefeated during the SLIAC regular season at 7-0-2, and 12-4-4 overall.
Jacob Ridenhour (FR, Jerseyville, IL/Jerseyville) gave Webster its first good chance to score with a shot just wide of the Principia net at the 22:00 mark in the first. The teams each had just three shots in the half and Webster had the only shot on goal. Their were only three corner kicks in the half in the defensive struggle as well, as the teams entered the locker room at 0-0.
The Panthers had a good chance just inside the 54:00 mark in the second when a shot partially deflected by Juan Garcia (SO, St. Charles, MO/Duchesne) went wide of the Webster goal as Gorlok keeper Kyle Hertel (SO, Sandpoint, ID/Sandpoint) could only watch. The Panthers had another close call at 75:00 off a corner kick on a volley that just went wide of the Gorlok net. At this point, Principia had out shot Webster 4-0 for the half, but the Gorloks would outshoot the Panthers the rest of regulation, 4-1.
In the first overtime, Webster got off one shot to Principia's none, and in the second OT, the Panthers had three shots to the Gorloks' two as the contest it became apparent the contest had 'shoot out' written all over it. Hertel had his third shutout of the year as his GAA dropped to 1.22 as he wound up 6-4-2 on the year.
The Webster defense allowed only 21 goals in 20 games, and only four in its final 10 games. In addition to being undefeated in the SLIAC, the men's soccer team had an even rarer feat in 2017, the Gorloks were undefeated at home at 6-0-4. The last time Webster was undefeated at home was in 1999 when they were 8-0-2.
Webster awaits individual accolades from the SLIAC post season awards, to be announced on Friday. Principia, the #3 seed, will host the championship vs. #4 Westminster College as the Blue Jays upset #1 Fontbonne University in Clayton. The Panthers were 5-2-2 in the SLIAC and are 6-8-3 overall.
Though the Gorloks were undefeated in SLIAC play, they entered the tournament as the #2 seed, with Fontbonne University edging them out with an 8-1 record.
