Volleyball Season Ends In SLIAC Semis W/Loss To Greenville

The Webster University volleyball team lost in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament semi-finals, 3-0, to Greenville University, on November 4 in Fulton, MO.  The Gorloks never seemed to get unwound in the match as the Panthers attack kept them on top throughout the afternoon.

The first set started with five different ties as the teams were deadlocked at 11-11.  Greenville took a 14-11 lead and at 14-12, the Panthers went on a 5-0 run to go up, 19-12.  Two kills each by Emi Beining (SR, Festus, MO/Lutheran South) and Rachel Mencel (SR, Colchester, IL/West Prairie) got the Gorloks within two at 21-17.  But the Panthers would take four of last five points to win the set 25-18.  Greenville outhit Webster, .273 to .113 in the set.

In set two, with Greenvile up 7-6, the Panthers went on a 6-0 run to open up a 13-6 lead.  Greenville took seven of the next 10 points to open a comfortable 20-9 advantage.  From there the Panthers coasted to a 25-14 set win and took a 2-0 match lead.

Webster fell behind 4-1 in set three before tying it, 6-6.  Greenville pulled back ahead, 12-9, and then led, 16-11, as the Gorloks called a timeout.  At 18-13, a kill by Macee Owen (JR, Tucson, AZ/Empire) and a Panther error cut the deficit to 18-15.  Another kill by Beining kept Webster within three at 19-16, but Greenville took the next three, prompting another Gorlok timeout at 22-16.

Two Greenville errors inched Webster within four, at 22-18, but the Panthers would go on to win the set, 25-20, and the match.  Greenville advanced to the championship vs. Westminster College, who had defeated Principia College earlier.

Taylor Kissel (SO, St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South) led Webster with six kills, and Ashley Robinson (SR, Bloomington, IL/Bloomington) had a team-high 12 assists.  Mencel had a solo block and three block assists.  Maria Soffner (SR, St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word Academy) had 18 digs and finishes her career with 1171 total, the 10th highest in team history.

Webster came into the tournament winners of eight of the last 11 tournaments.  The Gorloks entered the tournament as the #3 seed after losing the regular season's final match at Westminster, and tying with Greenville University for second place at 15-3.

Eight seniors, Stefanie Swan (Hoffman Estates, IL/Hoffman Estates), Soffner, Owen, Mencel, Beining, Robinson, Hannah Rowold (Piedmont, MO/Clearwater), and Drew Myers (Lesterville, MO/Lesterville), played their final match for Webster.

Webster wound up 17-14 overall on the season.  Greenville improved to 25-7.
